Construction and development became possible thanks to the financial support of the Economic Development Administration and Harris County Community Services Department.

We are excited about beginning the construction of a new Workforce Training Center; the 20,000-square-foot center will provide critical space for hands-on training for individuals in need of opportunity! While the demand for workers with middle-skills across the Greater Houston region is steep, nearly one million Houstonians lack the qualifications to fill these positions. This shortage of skilled workers plays a substantial role in both the city’s unemployment rates and in the continuing cycle of poverty for many families.

The Workforce Training Center will give students the training and experience they need to be attractive candidates for these positions and be competitive in the job market in the long term. Constructed 1000 feet behind SER’s Workforce Opportunity Center in Houston’s historic East End, the center will include eight classrooms, three training labs, office space, and necessary training equipment to help students meet their goals and gain the skills and credentials needed to succeed in today’s workforce. Through this expansion, SERJobs will be able to equip and empower over 8,000 people by 2022 through education, training, employment placement, and financial literacy education.

“At SER, we believe in connecting people with the power and purpose of work, and the Workforce Training Center will enhance our capacity to do just that,” says Sheroo Mukhtiar, Executive Director and CEO of SERJobs. “This training center, much like our Workforce Opportunity Center, will be much more than another beautiful building,” Mukhtiar continued. “It will bring about transformational change for the individuals, families, and communities that we serve.”

SERJobs is a nonprofit community organization that supports, educates, and equips people in the Texas Gulf Coast Region who come from low-income backgrounds or who have significant barriers to employment. We believe the power and purpose of work can transform lives and communities. SER is the Spanish verb, “to be,” so that is exactly what we impart on the people we serve – that they can be whatever they want “to be.”

Overcoming a Tough Childhood

Erick Reyes was referred to SERJobs by his parole officer after his release from prison. He endured a rough childhood, having lost both his parents at a young age, and made some poor choices as a result.

“My mother passed away from cancer when I was young,” Mr. Reyes stated, “then a few years later, my dad was robbed and murdered right in front of me. After that, I became careless and did things I shouldn’t have done. When I went to prison, I became a better person during those six years and became more mature. While I was there, I set goals for when I got home.”

Those goals include: getting a job, being a better father, traveling; getting his CDL license; and buying a house. Today, Mr. Reyes has accomplished his first four goals and is now purchasing his first home.

When Mr. Reyes arrived at SERJobs, he immediately enrolled in CDL training. As a single father of a young child, he felt that this career pathway would result in employment that would allow him to provide well for his family.

Throughout and after his training, Mr. Reyes kept close contact with SER staff. He was determined to utilize the coaching and job referrals he received to obtain employment that he considered “substantial, stable, and promising.”

Mr. Reyes has obtained a great job with Martin Preferred Foods and is committed to being a great employee due to their support and commitment to his progress.

Mr. Reyes is exceptionally grateful for the assistance and support of SERJobs. He stated that he wants to show his appreciation by offering to provide updates on his professional progress and that he would also like to provide support to the youth and young adults who come to SERJobs.

“I want to give back,” Mr. Reyes stated. “when you’re young, you can become careless. I feel like I can relate to young people who become careless. I want them to know that they don’t have to learn the hard way. If I can advise young people to keep them from making the mistakes I made, I feel like I will have fulfilled my mission.”

SER Career Coach, Tamira West, worked closely with Mr. Reyes and wished to convey the following:

I am honored to speak to the character and undeniable work ethic of Mr. Erick Reyes. I have been his career coach at SERJobs Houston since February of 2020. Mr. Reyes has proven to be one of, if not the best, clients I have had the privilege to work with since my tenure at SER. It is not every day that you meet a young person with such a clear insight into his goals, ambitions, and the trajectory that he aspires to ascertain in his career path. Since meeting and engaging with him, he has always been persistent, reliable, devoted, and malleable in his dedication to obtaining his license. He is a staunch and committed employee and has never wavered in the performance of his responsibilities, all while being a remarkable single father. In addition, Mr. Reyes was a diligent and devoted student in SER’s CDL training, where he recently obtained his Class A CDL certification.

On his behalf, I would like to emphasize with enthusiasm how diligent, rigorous, and thorough he has become. With his proven leadership and commitment to excellence, he is an invaluable employee and has the potential to grow in his current position. Mr. Reyes shows up every day with an honest and concise approach to the tasks at hand in whatever he is focused on. He has all of the basics mastered, demonstrated in his schooling and work. He is punctual, respectful, safety-conscious, and meticulous in all he is tasked to do. His humility is a testament to all that he has endured and overcame thus far in his young life.

Thank you for taking the time to allow me to opine on this exceptional client for your knowledge. Mr. Reyes’ employer is astonished by what an impeccable employee he is looking to his long-term employment with their company.

Ashley Scott came to SERJobs with a self-described “checkered past.” As a teenager, Ashley made poor decisions related to recreational drug use, which resulted in petty crimes that landed her behind bars. However, Ashley knew she wasn’t “who [she] was,” and after serving a few months in the Galveston County Jail, she became determined to live a better life. After that experience, Ashley states, “I was ready to stay on a straight and narrow path.” Ashley eventually had two children, and although the relationship with her children’s father didn’t work out, Ashley loved her life with her kids. Unfortunately, Ashley worked hard but had a low-paying job in the Hospitality Industry, and she couldn’t support her children the way she wanted.

Ashley knew it was time to forge a different path for herself and came across a SERJobs Facebook post advertising SER’s CORE + Construction training. This two-to-eight-week program allows clients to obtain their NCCER and OSHA 10 certifications. Ashley was thrilled that the activity was taking place in Galveston. She was in touch with SER’s Galveston Career Coach, Freelander Little, who had an office at Turning Point Church. Ashley expressed that what she wanted was skills training that would result in a certification or credential to find employment where she could earn a better wage.

Once Ashley completed her training and obtained her certifications, she was excited about all the fantastic new skills she gained. Still, the Covid-19 pandemic was entirely upon us by this time, and there was no work available. Eventually, she obtained one of SER’s paid-work-experience positions with 4B Disaster Response Network. Following Hurricane Harvey in August 2017, local churches went to work serving the community with immediate relief efforts. As the damage was assessed, they built a long-term plan to help communities on the long road to recovery. The 4B Disaster Response Network was formed to answer Hurricane Harvey’s immediate needs and prepare for future disasters that might affect our communities. Ashley was put to work repairing damaged homes.

While at 4B DRN, Ashley gained even more skills, such as mixing and installing a drywall and how to install flooring. After working there for almost two months, Ashley decided to leave 4B to take care of her child, who was struggling with asthma. A family member who had cared for the children had to temporarily step away from that obligation due to reasons related to Covid-19.

Today, Ashley has a new job at Regent Center in League City as a manager, with opportunities for advancement. Ashley related to SER that her supervisor appreciates the versatile skills she possesses, which she learned through her SER experience. In addition, Ashley indicated that the extra time her coach spent helping her with her computer skills (creating a resume and learning to create and edit documents, email etiquette, etc.) has been invaluable.

Ashley feels that the incentives provided by SER during this challenging time helped her tremendously, allowing her to purchase work clothes, steel-toed boots, and other work supports. In addition, gas cards allowed her to get to and from work during the Covid crisis while struggling financially. Ashley’s career coach, Free Little, affirmed that Ashly was highly motivated and teachable and believed that Ashley’s positive attitude, even through challenges, led to her success.
